MDM PLAYERS CARD
When MDM Golf Enterprises took over Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield three years ago, it acquired a course designed by the firm of a legendary player, whose creation won critical acclaim in a very short time.
But the state’s largest golf course operator realized that Gillette Ridge was hardly perfect and that it needed some attention to get to the next level. And they knew exactly where to start.
Since opening, the long, skinny green of the par-3 4th hole was one of the more perplexing designs. At 50 yards long and extremely narrow, the green frustrated golfers time and time again. Last year, the green was completely rebuilt and expanded to double its size and make it much easier for shots to hold.
That was a major fix on this picturesque layout, which sits on the 600-acre CIGNA campus. And the fixes are continuing with extensive renovations to bunkers throughout the course along with other alterations that will change how some holes are played.
For example, the par-3 15th hole, built in the classic Redan-style, now features a collection area for chipping, replacing two big winding bunkers that bordered the green.
Originally created by Arnold Palmer Course Design Co., Gillette Ridge features a variety of terrain that includes tree-lined fairways, streams, lakes and numerous elevation changes.
“This course has 18 scenic holes, and each one is both dramatic and interesting,” said Director of Golf Pat Aquaro. “You’ll learn something new about the course and how it sets up every time you play.”
Gillette Ridge also has an expansive driving range and practice area where you can warm up before your round or simply spend time working on your game.
The course is among seven facilities operated by MDM Golf Enterprises, which features the 2011 MDM Players Card offering reduced fees all season long.
